Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens

One of the most popular lenses in our recent popular DSLR lens list was the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS lens.

Today Canon have released an updated version of this very popular lens – a Mark II version.

With a really versatile focal length range it is no wonder that these 70-200mm lenses always feature in our top lenses lists. This updated lens comes with improved optical performance after a redesigned innards that now has a fluorite element and 5 UD elements to help with correcting chromatic aberration and faster focusing system.

Please Help Us Support Natalie

201001061518.jpgI don’t normally use this blog to post about more personal things but as it relates to one of our much loved members of our writing team whose family is going through a very tough time I thought it would be worth posting in the hope that our community might be able to lend some support – after all, that’s what I started this site to do.

As many of you know, one of our long time writers, Natalie Norton, has an 8 week old son who is battling fiercly with a vicious case of Pertussis (Whooping Cough). On top of that, baby Gavin (pictured right) has developed RSV, pneumonia and most recently a blood infection.

Ricoh CX2 [Digital Camera Review]

Ricoh has a unique way of snaring attention: like the delicate lilac hue of the CX2’s top panel, neatly capping the two-tone grey body. Pick it up and you immediately know which is the camera’s upper level, with power button, mode dial and zoom lever clearly seen.

The style continues: the rear has the usual four way rocker plus a vertical row of four buttons (menu, function, trash, display) and a replay button. There’s no optical viewfinder but the 7.6cm LCD screen provides a bright and ultra sharp look at the scene.

Ricoh CX2 Features

The CX2 has a 9.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, able to capture a maximum image size of 3456×2592 pixels, leading to a final print size of 29×22cm at 300 dpi. Movies? Just there, with support for 640×480 and 320×240 pixel clips — surely a wider movie spec is expected these days!

30 Photographic Goals for 2010

1. Don’t leave your camera

You never know what opportunities will present themselves to you if your camera is always at your side. It may be a bit of extra hassle, but you will develop a greater sense of observation by being aware of your camera constantly.

2. Shoot a Photo a Day

No greater photographic progress can be seen than by a personal photo a day challenge. Watch your development over a period of 1-3 months and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Your Simple Backyard Photography Studio

A Guest Post by: Simon Davidson

The first time I came across the concept of photography, the foremost image that popped into my head was the idea of wildlife and nature. The reason being because throughout my childhood I had seen wildlife photographers on television and in documentary films; and these were the only photographers I got to really see in action. Ultimately, wildlife, nature and the game reserve (Safari) attached itself; for me; to the concept of photography but as I gained immense interest in it, all became clear.

Lightening Backgrounds in Lightroom

before_after.jpg

I was recently asked by photographer Rhonda Pierce to look at an image that she’d taken and to suggest how the background could be lightened to white in Lightroom.

This image raises an interesting question for anyone involved in post production and trying to understand when to use Lightroom and when to use Photoshop for editing.

Ultimately, if this image is to be printed at a large size then Lightroom really isn’t the tool for the job. There is too much wispy hair, particularly on the left side of the model’s face just opposite her mouth, which is cumbersome to work with in Lightroom. Selecting around the hair and doing a detailed job really isn’t possible or feasible in Lightroom. Ideally, Photoshop and a good extraction tool such as Vertus Fluid Mask would be the best combination to use.

Capturing Mood, Ambience & Dramatic Effects [Book Review]

Capturing Mood etc.jpgThere are plenty of occasions when we’ve taken a photo that is unique, personal and very expressive of a moment, a person, a place, an event. Technical quality in these situations frequently goes out the window.
